Installing The Windows XP Hindi Language Interface Pack

Introduction
For most Indian users, particularly in the rural and semi urban sections of the country, the biggest obstacle to using a computer is the fact that the Operating System interfaces which are currently prevalent, are mostly in English. For a non-English speaker, this can pose a problem.
Microsoft has provided a solution to this problem for Windows XP users. With the Hindi Language Interface Pack (LIP), you can now have your Windows XP completely in Hindi. The purpose of this tutorial is to elaborate the procedure of installing the Windows XP Hindi LIP
Downloading the Windows XP Hindi LIP
You can download the installable file from this location

In order to download the Windows XP Hindi LIP, you will have to validate your Windows installation as genuine. The download site, using an ActiveX control, does this. Once you have validated your copy of Windows XP, you can then proceed to download the installable (LIPSetup.msi) onto your system.
The file is about 5 MB in size.
Once you have downloaded the installable, you can proceed with the installation.

  • At this point you can check how much disk space you have and how much will be left over after the installation. Click the button labeled "Disk Cost". You should now see something like this
  • After checking the disk status, you can proceed with the installation. You will need to restart your system after you have finished installing for the settings to take effect.
  • After your restart, you should be able to see your Windows XP installation in Hindi, like this
You can now access your computer completely in Hindi. All Windows components will now show up in Hindi. Third party applications however, may not support the Hindi LIP. However, this will not cause a problem. You can still continue to use Windows in Hindi. Only those components, which do not yet support Indic language computing, will show up in English.
